Discover the highlights of Italy’s Amalfi coast on foot

The Amalfi Coast is one of the most dramatic coastlines in Europe. Mountains
jut steeply out of the Mediterranean and picturesque towns nestled in the
coves below. Walking the ancient hillsides studded with lemon groves and
framed by deep gorges, we descend from the Agerola Plain to the quaint towns
of Positano, Ravello and of course Amalfi itself. No visit to the Bay of
Naples would be complete without a trip to see the remains of Pompeii under
the imposing volcanic cone of Mount Vesuvius. The best is saved till last
with arguably the world’s best coastal walk: the ‘Walk of the Gods’. Away
from the trails we partake in the favourite traditional pastime and sample
incredible food and wine just like the Italians do.

*Why with Exodus? *

The perfect combination of idyllic coastal views, heritage sites and
picturesque towns make the Amalfi Coast our most popular destination for
walking. We have been operating this trip for over 15 years, using the
comfortable Hotel Due Torri run by the friendly Acampora family who offer
genuine Italian hospitality and ensure everyone has a wonderful stay.

Cycling profile

Day 1

Those on group flights fly to Naples, where they will be met by their tour
leader on arrival. A transfer of approximately 1 hour 20 minutes takes us to
the Hotel Due Torri, our base for the week in the village of Bomerano, on the
Agerola plains above the Amalfi Coast. Enjoy a warm welcome from local
hosts, the Acampora family, before settling in. Land only clients can arrive
at any time, although we do recommend to join the group at the airport as
public transport options to the hotel are limited.
**

Day 2

From the hotel it’s a short stroll to the village square (or in the case of
Bomerano, a triangle) and the start of today’s walk. The circular route
provides a good chance to stretch the legs; following a mixture of paths and
tracks ascend to the top of Monte Tre Calli to be rewarded with spectacular
wide-open views of the jagged coastline and seemingly endless blue sea. The
Agerola Plain and the village of Bomerano are laid out below us and on a
clear day we can see as far as the famous island of Capri, a haven and
idyllic hideaway for many celebrated artists and writers over the past 200
years. After admiring the majestic scenery descend to Bomerano and enjoy some
rest time before a hearty dinner (10 km, 4.5 hrs walking including stops).
**

Day 3

Start walking towards Amalfi, a town popular with the British since Edwardian
times when the upper classes favoured the town as a pleasant place to spend
their winters. The route has a downhill bias, following the path down from
Bomerano at 700m to the shores of the Mediterranean, accompanied by wonderful
coastal views. There are sections of steps today (approx. 2000 in total), but
there are also plenty of opportunities to rest and go at your own pace. On
arrival in the town you will see the large Duomo (Cathedral) dominating the
town with its brightly-coloured tiled cupola (dome), which along with the
baroque facade and interior, is a typical example of regional architecture.
Take some time to explore the town, swim in the small bay or enjoy a
well-earned gelato before taking the transfer back to Bomerano (9km, approx.
5 hrs walking including stops).
**

Day 4

Transfer to the Bay of Naples, the area spanning between the region’s
capital city, Naples, and the town famed for its lemon groves, Sorrento.
Situated on the lower foothills of the volcano dominating the Gulf, Pompeii
was a thriving port town until Vesuvius’ catastrophic eruption spanning two
days in 79AD during which the city was buried in ash and pumice. Lost for
1700 years, Pompeii is now a UNESCO World Heritage site as the perfectly
preserved remains give us an amazing insight into life in a Roman city,
complete with bathhouses, bakeries and homes- some of which are still have
walls adorned with detailed frescoes. You may take some time to explore the
site this morning, perhaps opting for a detailed tour accompanied by a local
guide. After lunch, travel by bus high up onto the slopes of Vesuvius to view
the volcanic crater. Depending on weather conditions, it may be possible to
take one of the many extended walks around the caldera and beyond, led by an
expert volcanologist (optional).
**

Day 5

Starting from Amalfi, follow the stream gently upwards through lemon groves,
past the shells of former paper factories (a major local industry from the
12th to 19th centuries) and mediaeval ironworks into the Valle delle Ferriere
National Park. Continue on, crossing wooden bridges and following shady paths
carpeted with wild flowers in season, to the beautiful moss-clad waterfalls
within the closed gates of the nature reserve. Exodus groups have exclusive
access to this beautiful protected area; a real privilege as entrance is
restricted to the public. The route then follows the track back before
turning up to the quaint village of Pontone. We stop to take in outstanding
views of Amalfi and enjoy a picnic lunch in the charming village piazza
before proceeding up to Ravello, a town much favoured by the Bloomsbury set
and other artists and intellectuals due to its secluded location and
inspirational scenery. Take some time to explore at your leisure; perhaps
visit Villa Cimbrone with its meticulously landscaped gardens (8km, 4 hours
walking).
**

Day 6

Day at leisure to relax at the hotel or go down to the seafront. The hotel
also offers private transfers (payable locally) to the most popular
attractions in the region not covered during the rest of the week, including
the city of Herculaneum. Also destroyed during the disaster of 79AD,
Herculaneum was buried in mud rather than ash and it is said that this lead
to the site being even better preserved than the bigger Pompeii. You might
instead choose to take a ferry to the chic island of Capri and the funicular
through lemon groves up to Capri town. These optional excursions can be
arranged locally by your leader. Alternatively, spend the free day by the
pool or in true Italian style in a café, sipping espresso and watching the
world go by!
**

Day 7

A fitting finale to the week is one of the world’s finest day walks. Leaving
the hotel it’s a short stroll through the quiet village of Bomerano before we
join the ‘Sentiero degli Dei’ (Walk of the Gods), thus named as it
provides some of the most evocative views in the world, of ragged cliffs
speckled with tiny villages and extensive views of the sparkling
Mediterranean sea. The route follows undulating hills, carpeted with flowers
in season, the contours of the land and the coast. The trail is broken by
insights into local life, passing shepherds huts and ancient stone houses
carved into the limestone before we descend a long series of steps to the
colourful Positano, an almost vertical town clinging to the rock face of a
sheltered bay. Take some time to explore the alleyways lined with wisteria
and designer boutiques or have a dip in the clear water of the beachfront
before returning to Bomerano by boat and bus (seasonal) in the late
afternoon. During the week many meals will have included some delicious local
smoked mozzarella cheese and before dinner we will have the chance to see how
it is made and taste the mouth-wateringly fresh final product.(10 km, approx.
6 hrs walking including stops).

Day 8

Trip ends in Bomerano.

Spectacular Italian Coastal Scenery

Summary:
Beautiful coastal walking with so much to see and enjoy. The weather in
September was just perfect -mid 20’s Celsius every day.

Check out my short holiday video here https://youtu.be/YMSI8ye1kQc [1] to get
a taste of the area.

Question:
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Answer:
Seeing the magnificent coast from Tre Calli on the first day.

Question:
What did you think of your group leader?

Answer:
Satva was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and fun. She was keen to get us
walking as a group so everyone felt part of the experience.

Question:
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Answer:
Get some training in before the trip – there are a lot of steps and the
downhill can really stretch your calf muscles! Bring sticks as they will
help a lot. Good walking boots are a must.

Question:
Is there anything else you would like to add?

Answer:
Pompeii is extraordinary but when we were there it was overrun by lots of
tour groups. Amalfi was also very busy. Most of the walking routes are
quiet.

Beautiful hikes, beautiful sea and sky

Summary:
Coming back to Due Torri was really nice after hiking and exploring all day.
The family run hotel is comfortable and they took great care of our group.
The cooking demos were really fun and the food and wine was really good.
The hikes were good physicial work outs, not to mention the scenery was
spectacular. This tour is rated properly as moderate, but I would not
consider the hikes as walking tour. Being a hiker in the mountains where I
live, I was able to negotiate and feel physical good, but some people in our
group did struggle.
The ‘path of the gods’ hike was the highlight for me.

Rating: 4

Question:
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Answer:
The ‘path of the gods’ hike was the best. Standing up above the sea, looking
out, knowing I had got there on my own two legs was a thrill. The view just
filled my heart with such joy.
Also, the hike around the crater at Mount Vesuvius was unbelievable. What an
experience…..

Question:
What did you think of your group leader?

Answer:
Severio was our group leader and I did like him. At times his pace was a
little too fast and there were a couple of occasions where we had stopped for
a rest and he just took off again, leaving a couple of us still sitting.
Other than that, was a good leader, he did take care of us and lead us on
some awesome hikes.
My friend Beverly’s luggage did not arrive in Naples with us and I’m pretty
sure Severio and the Due Torri staff did some Italian/connection magic to get
her luggage to her the next day

Question:
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Answer:
This is my first trip with Exodus and was pleased with how it went.

A steptastic holiday!

Summary:
This was a great holiday in a beautiful area, fantastic coastal walks with
amazing views of the cobalt sea, trekking through lemon groves past olive
trees, fascinating towns and villages, and even a swim in the Mediterranean.
There were a lot of steps but the trip information did warn of this.
The Hotel Due Torri seemed to think it was a privilege to host us!

Rating: 5

Question:
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Answer:
Walking around the crater of Vesuvius and enjoying the views from the top.

Question:
What did you think of your group leader?

Answer:
Satva obviously loves her job and inspired us all with her enthusiasm,
knowledge and love of the Amalfi area. Nothing was too much trouble and she
even gave language tips!

Question:
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Answer:
Get in some training on steep uphill and downhill slopes, and extensive
sections of steps.

Wonderful hikes – terrific staff.

Summary:
It goes without saying that the hikes on the Amalfi Coast are spectacular. My
particular favorite was the hike around Vesuvious.
My tour had a very inauspicious start – my luggage did not arrive with me and
airport personnel were unable to provide information about where it ended up.
Due to the above-and-beyond efforts of my tour leader, the hotel staff and
their local contacts I got it back in just one day. Kudos to Exodus for
employing such competent and caring people.

Rating: 4

Question:
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Answer:
The moment when my missing luggage was wheeled I to the dining room while our
entire group applauded.

Question:
What did you think of your group leader?

Answer:
Saverio was great.

Question:
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Answer:
Take the term “walking” with a grain salt. That was HIKING, folks!

Walking the Amalfi Coast

Summary:
A fantastic holiday from start to finish.
The hotel was comfortable, food was great and the staff very friendly.
Our guide, Enrico was extremely knowledgeable and took us on some fantastic
walks.
View were absolutely stunning.
I would definitely recommend this holiday although you do need to be fit for
all the hills and steps!

Rating: 5

Question:
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Answer:
Just about every stunning view was inspirational! Have to admit I didn’t
expect to enjoy the visit to Pompey as much as I did – it was fascinating.
Walking around the crater of Vesuvius was surreal.
The walk to Ravello was my favourite walk.
It’s difficult to choose a best bit as it was all brilliant!

Question:
What did you think of your group leader?

Answer:
Enrico was very friendly and continually made sure everyone was OK.
His knowledge of the area, the plants, the culture etc was exceptional.
He was extremely likeable and we were very lucky to have him as a guide.

Question:
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Answer:
Yes! I would not rate this holiday as easy to moderate. I would rate it
moderate. I am reasonably fit but even I struggled on the last day with even
more steps. The walking is in beautiful countryside and coastline but there
really are thousands of steps to climb up and if you are not fit, you may
struggle. Having said that our leader Enrico always had a “Plan B” and for
those that were struggling, there was always the option of a bus for the
second half of the walk so that no-one completely missed out.

Proper walking shoes are also a must. Several of our group also found that
their walking poles helped on some of the walks.
Take a good camera – the views are stunning!

Question:
Is there anything else you would like to add?

Answer:
Just to say thank you to Enrico and all the staff at the hotel who all helped
to make this such a great holiday. I was also lucky that everyone in our
group was really friendly too.
I also enjoyed the few extra things included such as the pasta making
demonstration one evening, the visit to a cheese factory and the pizza making
demonstration one evening.

I would thoroughly recommend this holiday – just book early as it is very
popular and now I know why!

Bestselling holiday for a reason

Summary:
This was my first time to go on a holiday with Exodus and it lived up to all
my hopes. This is a very popular destination so we were divided into groups
within the overall group, each with our own leader. Severio was excellent –
informative, confident, knowledgeable about the area and thoughtful about
making sure the walks catered for everyone’s varying levels of fitness and
ability. He also gave good advice on things to do with our free day. Our
group gelled very well, and we were lucky with the weather as we arrived just
after the heatwave but avoided too much in the way of torrential downpours,
apart from one day – and the itinerary was adapted so we still got to do the
‘Walk of the Gods’ – it felt fitting to leave this lovely, scenic walk til
the last day. Equally impressive for the views was the ‘Tre Calli’ but all
the walks were lovely in their own way. They weren’t too challenging in terms
of distance, but definitely tough on the legs in terms of the steep ascents
and descents and the many steps – those with dodgy knees, take heed and take
sticks! The family-run hotel Due Torri was lovely – great hearty dinners each
day, cooking demos and the chance to get involved and get to know the staff,
and a good selection of breakfast choice though they could probably do with a
slightly more efficient coffee machine! I have many happy memories of this
trip.

Rating: 5

Question:
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Answer:
A draw between getting to the top of the Tre Calli and having our picnic
there with stunning views, and walking down into Positano together on the
last day as a group, tired but happy.

Question:
What did you think of your group leader?

Answer:
Severio as mentioned above was excellent.

Question:
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Answer:
Take sticks and be warned about the steep ascents and descents.

Question:
Is there anything else you would like to add?

Answer:
The trip to Pompeii and Vesuvio with the local guides was excellent too.

Fantastic scenery, great food and central base mean a relaxing trip with plenty of exercise

Summary:
All of my previous Exodus trips have involved moving around every 1 or 2 days
so this was a real treat to be able to unpack, relax and settle in. Coming
back at night felt like coming home – the staff were so welcoming and there
was plenty of food around…. we certainly needed it as the walking was
strenuous but not overly challenging.

The biggest thing to be aware of is the mixed ability of the group which
means we needed to be considerate of different speeds and abilities but this
meant we got plenty of time to look around, enjoy the scenery and talk to

Question:
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Answer:
Climbing Vesuvius and walking along the crater was an absolute highlight for
us and brought a sense of adventure to an otherwise relaxed walking trip/

Question:
What did you think of your group leader?

Answer:
We loved our guide Satva. She’s local and therefore deeply passionate about
the history and food. Most of the guides we met were local and that added a
huge amount to the experience. Loads of fun too!

Question:
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Answer:
It’s worth doing the side trips whenever possible, even if your legs are a
little achy. We chose to go to the ruins of Herculanum rather than Capri but
it could even be possible to squeeze in both if you can fit the visit to
Herculanum on your last day before your flight.

Activity Levels

Activity Levels range from Leisurely to Tough, the grading takes into account the daily cycling distances and terrain, as well as any technical riding skill required. We also consider the number of cycling days as there can be a cumulative affect from tiredness on a longer trip and the type of accommodation used, as this can also influence your day to day recovery.

If you are in any doubt, please give us a call on +353-1-607 9900 or email us.

Activity level 1 - Leisurely Activity level 1: Leisurely

If you can ride a bike and enjoy gentle exercise, these are an ideal introduction to a cycling holiday. No routes are entirely flat, so expect some short climbs and descents. Maximum daily height gain is approximately 250 metres and daily distances rarely exceed 50kms (32 miles), any longer days are often optional.

Activity level 3 - Moderate Activity level 3: Moderate

Most people who enjoy a weekend riding at home will enjoy a Moderate trip. You need to be in good health and reasonably fit. Ideal for occasional cyclists, or as a more relaxed trip for fitter riders. Moderate off-road trips require no previous experience. Distances rarely exceed 70kms (43 miles) per day.

Activity level 5 - Challenging Activity level 5: Challenging

For any ride at this level, fitness is important. Challenging trips require confidence in your ability and physical condition. They are equivalent to an extended period of cycling at home. Previous mountain biking experience is essential for Challenging off road trips as they will involve some technical riding.

Activity level 7 - Tough Activity level 7: Tough

Previous experience of the cycling style or surface is a must as these routes have long cycling days and tougher terrain on both road and off road trips. You need complete confidence in your fitness and technical ability to cope with difficult or steep terrain, rough surfaces and longer distances. Ideal for those seeking a challenge!

Split grades

In order to provide more accuracy, where a trip falls between two grades we use an intermediate or ‘split’ grade, for example 2: Leisurely/Moderate.
