Discover the highlights of Italy’s Amalfi coast on foot

The Amalfi Coast is one of the most dramatic coastlines in Europe. Mountains
jut steeply out of the Mediterranean and picturesque towns nestled in the
coves below. Walking the ancient hillsides studded with lemon groves and
framed by deep gorges, we descend from the Agerola Plain to the quaint towns
of Positano, Ravello and of course Amalfi itself. No visit to the Bay of
Naples would be complete without a trip to see the remains of Pompeii under
the imposing volcanic cone of Mount Vesuvius. The best is saved till last
with arguably the world’s best coastal walk: the ‘Walk of the Gods’. Away
from the trails we partake in a favourite traditional pastime and sample
incredible food and wine just like the Italians do.

*Why with Exodus? *

The perfect combination of idyllic coastal views, heritage sites and
picturesque towns make the Amalfi Coast our most popular destination for
walking. We have been operating this trip for over 15 years, using the
comfortable Hotel Due Torri run by the friendly Acampora family who offer
genuine Italian hospitality and ensure everyone has a wonderful stay.

Cycling profile

Day 1

Those on group flights fly to Naples, where they will be met by their tour
leader on arrival. A transfer of approximately 1 hour 20 minutes takes us to
the Hotel Due Torri, our base for the week in the village of Bomerano, on the
Agerola plains above the Amalfi Coast. Enjoy a warm welcome from our local
hosts, the Acampora family, before settling in. Land only clients can arrive
at any time, although we do recommend to join the group at the airport as
public transport options to the hotel are limited.

Day 2

From the hotel it’s a short stroll to the village square (or in the case of
Bomerano, a triangle) and the start of today’s walk. The circular route
provides a good chance to stretch the legs; following a mixture of paths and
tracks we ascend to the top of Monte Tre Calli to be rewarded with
spectacular wide-open views of the jagged coastline and seemingly endless
blue sea. The Agerola Plain and the village of Bomerano are laid out below us
and on a clear day we can see as far as the famous island of Capri, a haven
and idyllic hideaway for many celebrated artists and writers over the past
200 years. After admiring the majestic scenery descend to Bomerano and enjoy
some rest time before a hearty dinner.

Day 3

Start walking towards Amalfi, a town popular with the British since Edwardian
times when the upper classes favoured it as a pleasant place to spend their
winters. The route has a downhill bias, following the path from Bomerano at
700m to the shores of the Mediterranean, accompanied by wonderful coastal
views. There are sections of steps today (approx. 2000 in total), but there
are also plenty of opportunities to rest and go at your own pace. On arrival,
you will see the large Duomo (Cathedral) dominating the town with its
brightly-coloured tiled cupola (dome), which along with the baroque facade
and interior, is a typical example of regional architecture. Take some time
to explore the town, swim in the small bay or enjoy a well-earned gelato
before taking the transfer back to Bomerano.

Day 4

Transfer to the Bay of Naples, the area spanning between the region’s
capital city, Naples, and the town famed for its lemon groves, Sorrento.
Situated on the lower foothills of the volcano dominating the Gulf, Pompeii
was a thriving port town until Vesuvius’ catastrophic eruption spanning two
days in 79AD during which the city was buried in ash and pumice. Lost for
1700 years, Pompeii is now a UNESCO World Heritage site as the perfectly
preserved remains give us an amazing insight into life in a Roman city,
complete with bathhouses, bakeries and homes – some of which still have
walls adorned with detailed frescoes. You may take some time to explore the
site this morning, perhaps opting for a detailed tour accompanied by a local
guide. After lunch, travel by bus high up onto the slopes of Vesuvius to view
the volcanic crater. Depending on weather conditions, it may be possible to
take one of the many extended walks around the caldera and beyond, led by an
expert volcanologist (optional).

Day 5

Starting from Amalfi, follow the stream gently upwards through lemon groves,
past the shells of former paper factories (a major local industry from the
12th to 19th centuries) and mediaeval ironworks into the Valle delle Ferriere
National Park. Continue on, crossing wooden bridges and following shady paths
carpeted with wild flowers in season, to the beautiful moss-clad waterfalls
within the closed gates of the nature reserve. The groups have exclusive
access to this beautiful protected area; a real privilege as entrance is
restricted to the public. The route then follows the track back before
turning up to the quaint village of Pontone. We stop to take in outstanding
views of Amalfi and enjoy a picnic lunch in the charming village piazza
before proceeding up to Ravello, a town much favoured by the Bloomsbury set
and other artists and intellectuals due to its secluded location and
inspirational scenery. Take some time to explore at your leisure; perhaps
visit Villa Cimbrone with its meticulously landscaped gardens.

*Please note that on occasion, depending on weather conditions and group’s
fitness, your leader may decide to reverse the walk starting in Ravello and
ending in Amalfi (5 hours walking, 10km – 6.2 miles, , 214m – 702ft up –
450m – 1476ft down).

Day 6

Today we have a day at leisure to relax at the hotel or go down to the
seafront. The hotel also offers private transfers (payable locally) to the
most popular attractions in the region not covered during the rest of the
week, including the city of Herculaneum. Also destroyed during the disaster
of 79AD, Herculaneum was buried in mud rather than ash and it is said that
this lead to the site being even better preserved than the bigger Pompeii.
You might instead choose to take a ferry to the chic island of Capri and the
funicular through lemon groves up to Capri town. These optional excursions
can be arranged locally by your leader. Alternatively, spend the free day by
the pool or in true Italian style in a café, sipping espresso and watching
the world go by!

Day 7

A fitting finale to the week is one of the world’s finest day walks. Leaving
the hotel it’s a short stroll through the quiet village of Bomerano before we
join the ‘Sentiero degli Dei’ (Walk of the Gods), thus named as it
provides some of the most evocative views in the world, of ragged cliffs
speckled with tiny villages and extensive views of the sparkling
Mediterranean sea. The route follows undulating hills, carpeted with flowers
in season, the contours of the land and the coast. The trail is broken by
insights into local life, passing shepherds huts and ancient stone houses
carved into the limestone before we descend a long series of steps to the
colourful Positano, an almost vertical town clinging to the rock face of a
sheltered bay. Take some time to explore the alleyways lined with wisteria
and designer boutiques or have a dip in the clear water of the beachfront
before returning to Bomerano by boat and bus (seasonal) in the late
afternoon. During the week many meals will have included some delicious local
smoked mozzarella cheese and before dinner, we will have the chance to see
how it is made and taste the mouth-wateringly fresh final product.

Day 8

Trip ends in Bomerano.

Customer Feedback

A great first group guided holiday

Summary:
A first rate holiday with some great walks and time to relax over some fine
lunches in places I would not have found on my own. The hotel was a very
peasant family run place and the food delicious. This was our first guided
group walking holiday and I intend to do another, quite probably with Exodus,
who I thought were great from the first booking call to the holiday itself.

Rating: 5

Question:
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Answer:
The scenery was absolutely wonderful and I enjoyed the company of the group.

Question:
What did you think of your group leader?

Answer:
The group leader Severio was excellent. He was well organised, knowledgeable
and really led the group
up in a nice friendly way. He went the extra mile by doing things like in
organising walks/trips for us our day off and the final Saturday.

Question:
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Answer:
There is little preparation needed as Exodus take care of you all week. The
walking is moderate as the brochure/website suggests. I see in the comments
that much is made of steps! There are steps but they do not spoil the walking
and frankly are the only practical way of reaching the coast from the village
where we stayed.

Excellent trip

Summary:
This was my fifth holiday with Exodus and once again it was most enjoyable.
The combination of spectacular scenery, picturesque towns and visits to
Vesuvius and Pompeii make the Amalfi coast an ideal destination to visit.
Hotel Due Torri is a comfortable family run hotel. The staff are all friendly
and the food is excellent.

Rating: 5

Question:
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Answer:
Great walks with spectacular views and the opportunity to swim some days.
The walk round the vast crater of Vesuvius and the visit to Pompeii.

Question:
What did you think of your group leader?

Answer:
Vania is an excellent guide. She is friendly, knowledgeable and well
organised and always has a smile

Question:
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Answer:
Be aware that there are a lot of steps on some of the walks and walking poles
do help.

Question:
Is there anything else you would like to add?

Answer:
I would thoroughly recommend this holiday.

Take this trip!

Summary:
My sister and I have just completed this tour and we absolutely loved it!
The walks were tougher than we expected but worth every aching muscle at the
end of each day!

Rating: 5

Question:
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Answer:
Probably the end of the first day when we looked back at our achievement!
We also really enjoyed the hike up to Monte Tre Calli although it was
probably the most work.

Question:
What did you think of your group leader?

Answer:
Our guide, Vania, is a lovely young woman, a gem, and a credit to the
company. She was well organised, always courteous and ready to laugh and talk
with our group. I would happily take another walking trip with Vania.

Question:
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Answer:
Use walking poles. And read the reviews! I didn’t read many before the trip.
We didn’t really know it would be so hard on calves and knees. The poles
really helped.
Also you’re looking down a lot to see where you’re walking. Don’t forget to
stop and look at the views. They are truly beautiful!

Question:
Is there anything else you would like to add?

Answer:
The Hotel we stayed at for the week was comfortable (apart from very hard
beds) and clean. Food was plentiful and scrummy. Staff were amiable and
attentive. Cooking activities were fun too. The vibe here is quite relaxed.
Have a good look around the village of Bomerano, too. It’s very pretty.

Brilliant Trip

Summary:
This is a lovely well-balanced holiday. Some really good walks but also a
free day and a day to visit Pompeii and Vesuvius. Hotel staff made us all
welcome and served great food.

Rating: 5

Question:
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Answer:
Great walks with spectacular views. Plenty of opportunities to take photos
and just take in the scenery, as well as time to swim in some places. Pompeii
was just amazing – so much bigger than I ever thought and you see here a
Roman city where people lived, traded, went to the theatre, bought food and
drink from the various “bars” around the theatres. Then to finish the day
with a walk right around the crater rim of Vesuvius. Wow!

Question:
What did you think of your group leader?

Answer:
Our leader Suzi was wonderful. She loved what she did and enthused about the
people and the countryside we walked through. She clearly had made many
friends with the locals who all made us very welcome.

Question:
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Answer:
Enjoy yourself!

Wonderful Vacation tour

Summary:
First tour with Exodus and Im very impressed. From the initial
communication, information prior to leaving and the ease with which
everything was accomplished. The hotel was great – clean rooms (there was a
norovirus outbreak among several groups and I noticed my room was thoroughly
cleaned when it occurred.) The only thing was the pool wasn’t heated – so it
was FREEZING. So only used once and very quickly! The hikes were amazing,
but I believe this should be rated at a Level 3 not 2. Some hikes were very
challenging, averaging 7-8 miles each hike and steep areas, loose shale, etc.
One hike had 3,000 stairs along the way, another like 2000. It is a VERY
steep area. But our guide was awesome, arrangements were made for one hiker
who it was too difficult for. The food was EXCELLENT. The staff amazing and
very accommodating and friendly. Visited Capri on the off day and was given
lots of information on how to navigate. Pompeii and the hike up Vesuvius
were a highlight!!

Allin all I had a great time, meet some incredible people from around the
world whom Im sure we will stay in contact with. I will definitely take
another Exodus trip!

Rating: 5

Question:
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Answer:
The scenery was stunning. I love history so how (and why) people chose to
settle here and just the construction of the trails, stairs, terraces.
Pompeii was simply stunning. How people could accomplish what they did and
the ingenuity.

Question:
What did you think of your group leader?

Answer:
Mikala was just incredible. Outgoing, friendly, great sense of humor. Felt
very secure with her and also the sharing of her knowledge of the region.

Question:
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Answer:
Great trip – you will be well taken care of by not only Exodus staff but the
hotel and restaurant staff. Just a caution – while the trip was amazing –
would probably be rated one level higher. You will need trekking poles. They
do have some at the hotel to loan

Fabulous trip

Summary:
It’s over ten years ago since I did a walking trip and this is the first
one in Europe.
I found the walking to be as described in the notes. The only thing that they
don’t tell you is that ‘lactic acid city’ is going to hit those muscles
for a few days unless one has done enough hill walking, especially after the
2,000 plus steps down to Amalfi.
Do take at least one walking pole as it definitely helps to support limbs and
steady one’s descent where the path is uneven and rocky.
Our tour guide, Vania di Paoli, was a lovely guide. She was caring, patient,
efficient and organised and she was always there to brief us on the day’s
walk, in the evening, before dinner. She set a very nice pace for the group
and found us some interesting spots to eat our lunch.

Rating: 5

Question:
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Answer:
There were many moments that inspired me but the walk to, and around the top
of Vesuvius inspired me the most. It was a cloudy, moody day and perfect
conditions for walking up.

Question:
What did you think of your group leader?

Answer:
I liked my group leader very much and would be very happy to travel with her
again.
She had to deal with one or two challenges and handled them calmly.

Question:
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Answer:
As above; do some preparation before the trip. Make sure that you have a
Camelbak, or equivalent, and drink plenty of water so that you do not become
dehydrated.

Activity Levels

Activity Levels range from Leisurely to Tough, the grading takes into account the daily cycling distances and terrain, as well as any technical riding skill required. We also consider the number of cycling days as there can be a cumulative affect from tiredness on a longer trip and the type of accommodation used, as this can also influence your day to day recovery.

If you are in any doubt, please give us a call on +353-1-607 9900 or email us.

Activity level 1 - Leisurely Activity level 1: Leisurely

If you can ride a bike and enjoy gentle exercise, these are an ideal introduction to a cycling holiday. No routes are entirely flat, so expect some short climbs and descents. Maximum daily height gain is approximately 250 metres and daily distances rarely exceed 50kms (32 miles), any longer days are often optional.

Activity level 3 - Moderate Activity level 3: Moderate

Most people who enjoy a weekend riding at home will enjoy a Moderate trip. You need to be in good health and reasonably fit. Ideal for occasional cyclists, or as a more relaxed trip for fitter riders. Moderate off-road trips require no previous experience. Distances rarely exceed 70kms (43 miles) per day.

Activity level 5 - Challenging Activity level 5: Challenging

For any ride at this level, fitness is important. Challenging trips require confidence in your ability and physical condition. They are equivalent to an extended period of cycling at home. Previous mountain biking experience is essential for Challenging off road trips as they will involve some technical riding.

Activity level 7 - Tough Activity level 7: Tough

Previous experience of the cycling style or surface is a must as these routes have long cycling days and tougher terrain on both road and off road trips. You need complete confidence in your fitness and technical ability to cope with difficult or steep terrain, rough surfaces and longer distances. Ideal for those seeking a challenge!

Split grades

In order to provide more accuracy, where a trip falls between two grades we use an intermediate or ‘split’ grade, for example 2: Leisurely/Moderate.
